MSgt. Christopher A. Hunt's Retirement : Chis Hunt is a great friend and leader that I served with Okinawa from 1998 to 2001. Our families became very close while were were over there so when I got his retirement invite, I knew I had to go. I showed up on his door step unannounced and told him I need a place to crash and as I expected he went and got the air mattress. His ceremony was at MCRD Parris Island SC, his wife SgtMaj. Hunt was able to attend via video conference from Iraq. The ceremony was very emotional and all these big bad Marines were passing around tissues and letting it all out. It was great to see Chris, Alex, Chance, and Mel. Once you guys get settled I will bring the family to see all of you. I hope everyone enjoys the photos.

Justin M. Estes Memorial Service : On March 15, 2007, I had to honor of photographing the memorial service for Justin Michael Estes, son of Diane Salyers and Don Estes. Diane is a friend and co-worker that I have shot other events for.

Justin died March 5 in Samarra, Iraq, while assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations. Military officials say he was trying to help save others trapped in a humvee after a roadside bomb detonated, when a second device claimed his life.

Justin’s service was complete with military honors. The gym where he spent many of his high school days as a basketball player was packed. His coach shared personal reflections that really displayed Justin’s infectious character and outstanding since of humor.

Following the service at the gym, Patriot Riders escorted Justin’s body to the Lone Valley cemetery where he was given a 21-gun salute.

Justin "Dutch" Estes Silver Star Ceremony : I had the pleasure to attend the presentation of the Silver Star to SSgt Justin Estes posthumously. His mother Diane proudly accepted our nation third highest award for valor for her son. The award was presented by Justin's former CO and Sergeant Major from Ft. Bragg, NC at Oden High School to a standing room only crowd. The Patriot Guard Riders lined the walkway for entrance into the ceremony adorned with U.S. Flags. Congressman Mike Ross gave closing remarks at the ceremony. After the ceremony Diane and John invited everyone up to their home for refreshments. I thought I could slip away and visit Justin's gravesite and take a few photos but shortly after arriving people began to arrive at the cemetery and pay respect to a great American and friend. Seeing a mother put flowers on her son's grave is a heartbreaking site. It makes you realize the sacrifice that OUR soldiers make on a daily basis.
